Mean, Median and Mode Calculator
Type or paste a list of numbers. You get the mean, the median, the mode and the range, along with the count, the sum and the smallest and largest values.

How we calculate it
The mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted, or the average of the two middle values when there is an even number of them. The mode is the value that appears most often. The range is the largest value minus the smallest.
For 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 7, 4, 10 the sorted list is 2, 3, 4, 7, 7, 7, 9, 10. The sum is 49 and there are 8 values, so the mean is 6.125. The two middle values are both 7, so the median is 7. The value 7 appears three times, so it is the mode, and the range is 10 − 2 = 8.
Assumptions and limits
- If every value appears once, there is no mode. If several values tie for the most appearances, all of them are listed.
- The list can hold up to 10,000 numbers. Negative numbers and decimals are fine.
- Values are compared as typed, so 4 and 4.0 count as the same number but 4 and 4.00001 do not.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the average, which every value pulls on. The median is the middle value, which is not moved by a few extreme numbers. For incomes or house prices the median is often the fairer picture.
Can a list have more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values appear equally often and more than any other, each one is a mode. This calculator lists them all.
How do I find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the list, take the two middle values and average them. For 1, 2, 3, 4 the two middle values are 2 and 3, so the median is 2.5.
