Unit Converters

Length, weight, volume, area, speed, temperature and data unit conversions.

How these unit converters work

Every converter on this page multiplies by a fixed factor, and the factors that are exact by definition are used exactly: one inch is 2.54 centimeters, one pound is 0.45359237 kilograms, one mile is 1,609.344 meters and one U.S. gallon is 3.785411784 liters. Because the factor is exact, converting there and back returns the number you started with, apart from display rounding.

Check which unit system a name belongs to before you convert. A U.S. gallon is not an imperial gallon, a U.S. fluid ounce is not an imperial fluid ounce, and a ton can mean 2,000 pounds, 2,240 pounds or 1,000 kilograms. The Fuel Economy Converter is the one non-obvious case: miles per gallon and liters per 100 kilometers are inverses of each other, so a higher mpg means a lower L/100 km. For temperature and for data sizes, see the Temperature Converter in Everyday Calculators and the Data Storage Converter in Technology Calculators.
