How we calculate it

Every weight is turned into kilograms and then into the unit you want. The pound is defined exactly as 0.45359237 kg. An ounce is one sixteenth of a pound (28.349523125 g), a stone is 14 pounds, a US short ton is 2,000 pounds and a UK long ton is 2,240 pounds. A metric ton is 1,000 kg.

So 1 pound is 453.59237 grams and 1 kilogram is about 2.2046226 pounds. Results are shown to 12 significant digits.

Assumptions and limits

  • Weight and mass are not the same thing in physics, but in everyday use these units measure how heavy something is, and that is what this page converts.
  • These are avoirdupois ounces and pounds. Troy ounces, used for precious metals, are not included.
  • A tonne is the metric ton. The US ton and the UK ton are different from each other and from the metric ton.
