How we calculate it
Every length is turned into meters and then into the unit you want. The units are defined exactly: 1 inch = 0.0254 m, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 yard = 0.9144 m, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m and 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m. The metric units are powers of ten of the meter.
So 1 mile is 1.609344 kilometers, and 1 mile is also exactly 5,280 feet. Results are shown to 12 significant digits, so very long answers are rounded.
Assumptions and limits
- These are the international units. The US survey foot, an older unit used in some land surveys, is slightly longer and is not included.
- A nautical mile is used at sea and in the air. It is not the same as a statute mile of 5,280 feet.
- Negative values convert in the same way, for example for a change in position.
