How we calculate it

With weight W in kilograms and height H in centimeters, Mosteller is √(H × W ÷ 3600), Du Bois is 0.007184 × W^0.425 × H^0.725 and Haycock is 0.024265 × W^0.5378 × H^0.3964. The answer is in square meters.

For 80 kg and 180 cm, Mosteller gives 2.00 m², Du Bois 2.00 m² and Haycock 2.01 m². The three formulas agree within a few percent for most adults.

Assumptions and limits

  • This is an estimate for general information. It is not medical advice and cannot replace a conversation with a doctor or dietitian. Do not use this to work out a medicine dose. Doses are set by a doctor or pharmacist.
  • The formulas can drift apart at very high body weights.
  • The calculator is for adults, with a height of 90 to 260 cm and a weight of 20 to 500 kg.

Frequently asked questions

What is body surface area used for?

Clinicians use it to scale some medical measurements and some medicine doses, and in research. This page is only an estimate for general information.

Which BSA formula is the standard?

Mosteller is the simplest and is widely used. Du Bois is the oldest. All three give close results for ordinary body sizes.

Is BSA the same as the skin area?

It is an estimate of the area of the skin, calculated from height and weight rather than measured.
