How we calculate it

Pace is total time divided by distance. One mile is 1.609344 kilometers, so pace per kilometer equals pace per mile ÷ 1.609344. Speed is distance divided by time in hours.

The projected race times simply hold that pace over each distance (5K, 10K, 13.1 miles and 26.2 miles).

Assumptions and limits

  • Real race times usually slow over longer distances because of fatigue, so use projections as a guide rather than a prediction.
  • The marathon distance is 26.21875 miles (42.195 km) and the half marathon is 13.109375 miles.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance. A 40 minute 5 mile run is 8 minutes per mile.

What is a good 5K pace?

It depends on age, training and goals. Many recreational runners fall between 8 and 11 minutes per mile.

How do I convert min/mile to min/km?

Divide the minutes per mile by 1.609344. 8:00 per mile is about 4:58 per kilometer.
