Data Storage Converter
Enter an amount of data, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want. You get the converted amount and a table of the same amount in every unit, decimal and binary.
Your numbers
How we calculate it
Every amount is turned into bytes and then into the unit you want. A byte is 8 bits. The decimal units go up by 1,000 each step: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, 1 GB = 10^9 bytes, 1 TB = 10^12 bytes. The binary units go up by 1,024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 2^20 bytes, 1 GiB = 2^30 bytes, 1 TiB = 2^40 bytes.
So 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, and divided by 2^30 that is 931.322574615 GiB. Results are shown to 12 significant digits.
Assumptions and limits
- Drive makers use the decimal units. Many operating systems show sizes in binary units but label them GB or TB. That is why a new 1 TB drive seems to hold only about 931 GB.
- The correct names for the binary units are kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte and so on, written KiB, MiB, GiB.
- The amount must be zero or more.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Your system counts in units of 2^30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and calls them GB, and 10^12 divided by 2^30 is 931.32. Nothing is missing. It is the same amount in a different unit (931.32 GiB).
How many MB are in a GB?
There are 1,000 MB in a GB in the decimal system and 1,024 MiB in a GiB in the binary system.
How many bits are in a byte?
There are 8 bits in a byte. Network speeds are usually quoted in bits and file sizes in bytes, so divide a speed in bits by 8 to compare.

Worked example (a fixed example using the starting numbers, it does not change as you type)
Inputs: Amount of data = 1; From = terabyte (TB); To = gibibyte (GiB).
- Result 931.322574615 GiB
- Conversion 1 TB = 931.322574615 GiB
