How we calculate it
Selling price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100). Profit = price − cost. Profit margin = profit ÷ price × 100.
A 50% markup on a $60 cost gives a $90 price, $30 profit and a 33.3% margin.
Assumptions and limits
- Check that your price still works after discounts, shipping, payment fees and taxes.
- Some industries set price by margin instead of markup. Use the profit margin calculator to work backward.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 50% markup?
Multiply the cost by 1.5. A $40 item becomes $60.
Why is margin lower than markup?
Both use the same profit dollars but divide by different bases: margin divides by the (larger) price, markup by the (smaller) cost.
Is a 100% markup a 100% margin?
No. A 100% markup doubles the cost and results in a 50% margin.
