How we calculate it
From a net price: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100), and VAT = gross − net. From a gross price: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and VAT = gross − net.
For example, a net price of 250 at 20% VAT has 50.00 of VAT and a gross price of 300.00.
Assumptions and limits
- VAT rates differ by country and by type of goods. Enter the rate that applies to your sale.
- The calculator does not know about reduced rates, zero rates, exemptions or reverse charge rules.
- Round according to your local invoicing rules. This is an estimate, not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is VAT?
Value added tax is a tax on sales that is collected at each step from producer to customer. Businesses charge it on what they sell and can usually reclaim it on what they buy.
How do I take VAT out of a total?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal. A gross price of 300 at 20% is 300 ÷ 1.20 = 250 net, so 50 of it is VAT.
How is VAT different from sales tax?
Both are taxes on spending. VAT is collected at each stage of the supply chain, while sales tax in the United States is normally charged once, at the final sale. The sales tax calculator handles the second case.
