How we calculate it

The combined rate is the sales tax rate plus the local rate. To add tax: tax = price × combined rate ÷ 100, and the price with tax is the price plus the tax.

To take tax out of a total that already includes it: price before tax = total ÷ (1 + combined rate ÷ 100). For example, 120 at a combined 7.5% has 9.00 of tax and costs 129.00 in total.

Assumptions and limits

  • You enter the rates. The calculator does not know where you are, and rates change.
  • Some goods are exempt or taxed at a different rate, and some places tax each item separately, so a receipt can differ by a few cents.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the price by the combined tax rate as a decimal and add the result to the price. At 7.5%, a price of 120 has 9.00 of tax, so the total is 129.00.

How do I take sales tax out of a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. A total of 129.00 at 7.5% divided by 1.075 gives a price before tax of 120.00.

Why does my receipt show a slightly different tax?

Stores may round tax on each item or on the whole bill, some items are exempt, and rates can differ by city or county. Use the rate printed on your receipt or from your tax authority.
