How we calculate it

Start with the standard 4.0 grade points, then add 0.5 for honors courses and 1.0 for AP, IB or dual-credit courses (only when the grade is above F). Multiply by credits, add up and divide by total credits.

Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0, for example 5.0 for an A in an AP course.

Assumptions and limits

  • Schools use different weighting systems. Some add 0.5 for both honors and AP, some cap the GPA, and some do not weight at all.
  • Colleges often recalculate GPA using their own method, so treat this as an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA treats every class equally on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for advanced courses, so it can go above 4.0.

Do colleges use weighted GPA?

Policies vary. Many colleges recalculate GPA on their own scale, and some look at both weighted and unweighted values.

How do I find my school’s weighting?

Check your school’s course catalog or ask a counselor, then adjust the numbers accordingly.
