How we calculate it

Each score is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights: weighted average = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight).

For scores of 88, 92, 75 and 85 with weights of 20, 30, 25 and 25, the total is 88 × 20 + 92 × 30 + 75 × 25 + 85 × 25 = 8,520. Dividing by 100 gives 85.2%, which is a B on the scale below.

Assumptions and limits

  • The letter grade uses a common US scale: A from 90, B from 80, C from 70, D from 60 and F below 60. Your school or course may use a different scale, including plus and minus grades.
  • Weights do not have to add up to 100. If they do not, the average still divides by the total weight, and a note tells you the total.
  • Scores above 100, such as extra credit, are allowed. An item with a weight of 0 has no effect.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total of the weights. Items that count more, such as a final exam, pull the average further.

What if my weights do not add up to 100?

The calculator divides by whatever the weights add up to, so the result is still a weighted average of the items you entered. A note shows your total so you can check for a typing mistake.

How do I find the score I need on my final?

Use the final grade calculator. It works backwards from the grade you want to the score you need on the last exam.
