How we calculate it

To add or subtract, the fractions are put over a common denominator: a/b + c/d = (a × d + c × b) ÷ (b × d). To multiply, multiply the tops and the bottoms: a/b × c/d = (a × c) ÷ (b × d). To divide, multiply by the reciprocal: a/b ÷ c/d = (a × d) ÷ (b × c).

The answer is then simplified by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6, which is 0.8333 as a decimal. A fraction larger than 1 is also shown as a mixed number, so 7/4 is 1 3/4.

Assumptions and limits

  • Use whole numbers for the tops and bottoms. To enter a mixed number such as 1 1/2, write it as the fraction 3/2.
  • A denominator cannot be zero, and you cannot divide by a fraction that equals zero.
  • Numbers up to 10,000,000 are accepted.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator, add the tops, then simplify. For 1/2 + 1/3, the common denominator is 6, so you add 3/6 and 2/6 to get 5/6.

How do I turn an improper fraction into a mixed number?

Divide the top by the bottom. The whole number result is the whole part, and the remainder over the bottom is the fraction part. 7 ÷ 4 is 1 with remainder 3, so 7/4 is 1 3/4.

Why is the answer simplified?

A simplified fraction has no common factor in the top and bottom, so it is the neatest way to write the value. 6/12 and 1/2 are the same number, and 1/2 is the simplified form.
