How we calculate it

Density is mass divided by volume, ρ = m ÷ V. The calculator turns your values into kilograms and cubic meters using the exact definitions (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 in = 0.0254 m, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L), solves for the missing one of ρ, m and V, and converts back to the unit you chose.

For example, 500 g in a volume of 250 mL has a density of 2 g/cm³, which is 2,000 kg/m³ or 124.856 lb/ft³. Rearranged, mass = density × volume and volume = mass ÷ density, so 7.85 g/cm³ steel filling 2 liters weighs 15.7 kg.

Assumptions and limits

  • Density changes with temperature and pressure, especially for gases and liquids. Use the density at the temperature you care about.
  • Pure water is about 1 g/cm³ (1,000 kg/m³) near 4 °C. Items that are less dense than water float in it.
  • A mixture or a hollow object has an average density. This page does not know what the material is made of.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for density?

Density equals mass divided by volume. If the mass is in grams and the volume in cubic centimeters (or milliliters), the density comes out in grams per cubic centimeter.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1,000. Water at 1 g/cm³ is 1,000 kg/m³, and 7.85 g/cm³ is 7,850 kg/m³. To get lb/ft³, multiply g/cm³ by about 62.43.

How do I find the volume of an object from its weight?

Choose volume as the value to solve for, enter the mass and the density of the material, and read the volume. For 1 kg of water at 1 g/cm³ that is 1 liter.
