How we calculate it
The calculator converts both dates to calendar days in UTC, so daylight saving time never shifts the answer, and subtracts them. Leap days are counted automatically.
The years-months-days result counts whole calendar months first and then the leftover days. Weekdays count Monday to Friday and do not remove public holidays.
Assumptions and limits
- Choosing “include the end date” adds one day, which is how many contracts and event counts are written.
- If the end date is before the start date the two are swapped and a note is shown.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are in a year between two dates?
A non-leap year has 365 days and a leap year has 366. January 1 to the next January 1 is 365 or 366 days apart depending on whether a February 29 falls between.
Does this count business days?
It shows weekdays (Monday to Friday). Public holidays vary by country and are not removed.
Why do I get a different answer elsewhere?
Usually one tool includes the end date and the other does not. Switch the option above to match.
