Your numbers
How we calculate it
For each day the shift is the end time minus the start time, and the break is taken off. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is taken to end the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. The days are added to get the week. Hours above the overtime limit are paid at the rate times the multiplier, and the rest at the plain rate.
For example, five days of 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30 minute break is 8 hours a day and 40 hours for the week. At 20 an hour that pays 800. Adding a Saturday of 08:00 to 14:00 makes 46 hours, 6 of them overtime, and the pay 40 × 20 + 6 × 20 × 1.5 = 980.
Assumptions and limits
- Overtime is worked out on the weekly total only. Rules in your place or in your contract may count overtime per day, on rest days or on holidays, and they decide what you are owed.
- Leave both the start and the end of a day empty for a day off. A day needs both times, and a start and end that are the same are not accepted.
- The pay is before tax and other deductions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked on a time card?
Subtract the start time from the end time, take off the unpaid break, and add the days. Express the minutes as a fraction of an hour for pay, so 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours.
How does the calculator handle a night shift?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, it assumes the shift ends the next day. 22:00 to 06:00 counts as 8 hours before any break.
Does it work out overtime?
Yes, for hours over the weekly limit you set, at the multiplier you choose. Daily overtime rules are not included.
