How we calculate it

Each time is turned into seconds: days × 86,400, hours × 3,600 and minutes × 60, plus the seconds. The two totals are added or subtracted, and the answer is written back as days, hours, minutes and seconds.

For 1 day 2 hours 30 minutes plus 5 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds, the total is 116,130 seconds, which is 1 day 8 hours 15 minutes 30 seconds, or 32.2583 hours. A negative answer is shown with a minus sign.

Assumptions and limits

  • A day here is exactly 24 hours. Clock changes for daylight saving time are not included.
  • Leave a box empty to count it as zero. Decimals such as 1.5 hours are accepted.
  • Use the days between dates calculator when you have calendar dates instead of lengths of time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes?

Add the minutes and carry every full 60 into the hours, then add the hours. 5 hours 45 minutes plus 3 hours 30 minutes is 9 hours 15 minutes.

What happens when the answer is negative?

If you subtract a longer time from a shorter one, the result is shown with a minus sign. 3 hours minus 4 hours 30 minutes is minus 1 hour 30 minutes.

How many seconds are in a day?

There are 86,400 seconds in a day: 24 hours of 60 minutes of 60 seconds.
