How we calculate it
A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, not counting leap seconds. Milliseconds are the same count multiplied by 1,000. Both directions are worked out in UTC, never in the time zone of your computer.
For example 1,700,000,000 seconds is 22:13:20 UTC on Tuesday 14 November 2023, and 2,147,483,647 is 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Timestamps before 1970 are negative.
Assumptions and limits
- Everything is UTC. To see the same moment in another time zone, add or subtract that zone’s offset.
- Dates from the year 1 to 9999 are supported. If your timestamp is far too large, it is probably in milliseconds, so change the unit.
- Leap seconds are not counted, which is how Unix time normally works.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
It is a way of writing a moment in time as one number: the seconds that have passed since 1 January 1970 UTC. Computers use it because it does not depend on time zones.
How do I tell seconds from milliseconds?
Current timestamps have 10 digits in seconds, such as 1700000000, and 13 digits in milliseconds, such as 1700000000000. If the number has 13 digits, choose milliseconds.
What happens in 2038?
Systems that store the timestamp as a signed 32 bit number run out at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Most modern systems use 64 bits and are not affected.
