How we calculate it

In miles and MPG, the fuel needed is distance ÷ miles per gallon. In kilometers, it is distance × liters per 100 km ÷ 100. The trip cost is the fuel needed times the fuel price, and the cost per person is that divided by the number of people.

For 300 miles at 30 MPG, you need 10 gallons. At 3.50 a gallon that is 35.00 for the trip, or 17.50 each for two people, which is 0.12 per mile.

Assumptions and limits

  • Real fuel economy changes with speed, load, weather and traffic, so use a figure that matches the trip.
  • Tolls, parking and wear on the vehicle are not included.
  • The dollar sign is only a label. Use the same currency for the fuel price, and the results are in that currency.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the fuel cost of a trip?

Divide the distance by your miles per gallon to get the gallons used, then multiply by the price per gallon. The calculator does this for you, in miles or kilometers.

How do I convert between MPG and L per 100 km?

Divide 235.215 by the miles per US gallon to get liters per 100 km. 30 MPG is about 7.84 L per 100 km. The gas mileage calculator converts both ways.

How do I split the cost between passengers?

Enter the number of people sharing. The calculator divides the trip cost evenly between them.

Inputs: Units = Miles, miles per gallon and price per gallon; Distance (miles) = 300; Fuel economy (miles per US gallon) = 30; Fuel price ($ per US gallon) = 3.5; People sharing the cost = 2.

  • Trip cost $35.00
  • Fuel needed 10.00 gallons
  • Cost per person $17.50
  • Cost per mile $0.12
