How we calculate it

The unit price is the price divided by the quantity. The item with the lowest unit price is the best buy, and the saving is (1 − lowest unit price ÷ highest unit price) × 100.

For 3.99 for 16 oz, 5.49 for 24 oz and 2.50 for 8 oz, the unit prices are 0.2494, 0.2288 and 0.3125 per oz. Item 2 is the best buy and costs 26.8% less per ounce than item 3.

Assumptions and limits

  • Enter every quantity in the same unit, for example all in ounces or all in grams. The calculator does not convert between units.
  • The lowest unit price is the cheapest per unit, but it is only a good deal if you will use all of it.
  • Leave an item empty to skip it. At least one item is needed, and two or more give a best buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare prices of different sizes?

Divide each price by its size to get a price per unit, using the same unit for every product. The lowest number is the cheapest per unit.

Is the biggest pack always the best buy?

Not always. Larger packs are often cheaper per unit, but not every time. Check each one, and only count it as a saving if you will use or store it all.

What if the units are different, such as grams and ounces?

Convert one to match the other before you enter them. For example, 1 ounce is 28.35 grams.
