How we calculate it

For a single amount the future value is FV = PV × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t), where r is the yearly rate, n the compounding periods per year and t the years. With 5,000 at 6% compounded monthly for 10 years, the starting amount alone grows to about 9,096.98.

Monthly deposits are added at the end of each month, using the monthly rate that matches your compounding, and grow the same way. The result splits into growth on the starting amount, your deposits and the growth on those deposits.

Assumptions and limits

  • A constant rate is assumed. Real returns vary, and savings rates change over time.
  • Taxes, fees and inflation are not included.
  • More frequent compounding adds a little growth, but the rate matters far more than the frequency.

Frequently asked questions

What is future value?

It is what money today will be worth later if it earns interest. The calculator shows how a starting amount, regular deposits and compounding combine over the years.

How much difference does compounding frequency make?

Less than most people expect. Monthly instead of yearly compounding at 6% adds a small amount over a decade, while a one point higher rate adds far more.

How is this different from the compound interest calculator?

They use the same maths. This page focuses on the future value formula and splits the result into growth on the starting amount and growth on deposits, while the compound interest page shows contributions and interest.
