How we calculate it

The combined rate is the state sales tax rate plus the local rate. By default the local rate is the average across the state, weighted by population. The sales tax is the price times the combined rate, and the total is the price plus the tax.

If the price already includes tax, the price before tax is the price divided by one plus the combined rate, and the tax is the difference.

Assumptions and limits

  • State and local rates are from the Tax Foundation, midyear 2026 (local averages as of January 1, 2026). They are flagged for review in the tax data file.
  • Real local rates depend on the city and county, so the average can be off by a point or more. Type your own rate for an exact result.
  • Groceries, clothing, medicine and other items may be taxed at a lower rate or exempt. Some states also tax services.
  • Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state sales tax. Alaska has local taxes in some places.

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no sales tax?

Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state or average local sales tax. Alaska has no state tax but many towns charge a local one.

Why is my total different at the register?

Cities and counties add their own rates, and some items are taxed differently. Use your local combined rate for the closest match.

How do I take tax out of a price that includes it?

Divide the price by one plus the rate. For example, $107.25 with a 7.25% rate is $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100.00 before tax.

Do online purchases have sales tax?

Most states now require online sellers to collect sales tax based on where the order is delivered, so the same rules usually apply.
