How we calculate it

Each state starts from your income, subtracts its own standard deduction and personal or dependent exemptions, and taxes what is left. Where a state gives a credit instead of a deduction, the credit is taken off the tax.

Tax is worked out bracket by bracket: each slice of taxable income is taxed at that bracket’s rate, and the slices are added up. Your average rate is the total tax divided by your income, and it is always lower than the top bracket you reach.

Of the 51 places in the table, 8 do not tax wages, 15 use one flat rate and 27 use brackets, with top rates up to 13.3%. Married filing jointly uses the joint table; the other statuses use the single table.

Assumptions and limits

  • Tax year 2026 rates and brackets as of 2026-02-11, from the Tax Foundation’s state table. They are flagged for checking against each state’s revenue department.
  • Not included: local income taxes, surtaxes on high incomes, income phase-outs of deductions and credits, the federal tax deduction some states allow, and retirement or military income exclusions.
  • Washington taxes capital gains only. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no income tax on wages?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming tax no wages. Washington taxes only capital gains of high earners.

Why is my average rate lower than the top rate?

Only the income above each bracket threshold is taxed at that bracket’s rate. The lower slices of your income are taxed at lower rates, so the average of everything is lower than the top rate.

What is the difference between a deduction and a credit?

A deduction lowers the income that is taxed. A credit lowers the tax itself, dollar for dollar. Some states, such as California, give personal exemption credits instead of deductions.

Does this include city or county income tax?

No. Some places, such as New York City, Ohio cities and Maryland counties, add a local income tax on top of the state tax. Add yours separately.

Is this the tax taken out of my paycheck?

Not exactly. Withholding is based on your Form W-4 and the state’s withholding tables. This calculator estimates the tax for the whole year, which is what you owe when you file.
