How we calculate it

ROI = (final value − amount invested) ÷ amount invested × 100. A positive number is a gain and a negative number is a loss.

Annualized ROI = ((final value ÷ amount invested)^(1 ÷ years) − 1) × 100. It lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time.

Assumptions and limits

  • Include all costs (fees, taxes, improvements) in the amount invested or subtract them from the final value for a realistic ROI.
  • ROI ignores risk and the timing of cash flows. For investments with many deposits and withdrawals, a money-weighted return is more accurate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROI?

It depends on the asset and the risk. Compare the annualized figure against alternatives such as a savings account or a broad market index over the same period.

What is the difference between ROI and CAGR?

ROI is the total percentage gain. CAGR (and annualized ROI) is the steady yearly rate that would produce the same gain over the period.

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. If the final value is below the amount invested, ROI is negative and shows the percentage loss.
