How we calculate it
Your yearly gross pay is the pay per period times the number of periods. Federal income tax comes from the 2026 IRS brackets after the standard deduction and your pre-tax 401(k) and health insurance. Social Security and Medicare are taken from wages as well.
Washington does not tax wages. Your paycheck has no state income tax taken out, so only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare apply.
On $2,500 gross every two weeks with 5% to a 401(k) and $100 of health insurance, a single filer in Washington takes home about $1,902.25 per paycheck: federal income tax $189.15, Social Security $148.80, Medicare $34.80 and no state income tax.
Take-home pay in Washington at five salaries (single filer paid every two weeks, 5% to a 401(k), $100 of health insurance, 2026 tax data): $40,000: $1,171.96 per paycheck; $60,000: $1,756.19 per paycheck; $80,000: $2,313.88 per paycheck; $100,000: $2,825.03 per paycheck; $150,000: $4,089.00 per paycheck.
Washington compared with the other 50 states and DC (rank 1 is the lowest): state income tax on $75,000 of wages for a single filer is about $0 a year, rank 1 of 51 (median $2,550); the combined state and average local sales tax rate is 9.57%, rank 49 (median 7%); the effective property tax rate is 0.811%, rank 29 (median 0.789%). The income tax figure comes from this calculator’s bracket data, the property tax figure from the Census Bureau, and the sales tax figure from the same file as the rates above.
Beyond your paycheck in Washington: the median home value is $605,600 and homeowners pay a median of $4,911 a year in property tax (about $409 a month), $5,005 for homes with a mortgage and $4,702 for homes without one (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2025). With the state rate and the average local rate combined (9.57%), every $1,000 of taxable purchases carries about $95.70 of sales tax.
Assumptions and limits
- An estimate for tax year 2026 using the standard deduction. Your employer withholds from your Form W-4 and the state’s withholding tables, so real paychecks can differ.
- Washington is not among the states the Tax Foundation lists with local income taxes (Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania), so for most workers there is none to add. You can still type a local rate if you know one applies.
- Washington has no tax on wages, but employees pay the WA Cares Fund long-term care premium of 0.58% of gross wages, with no wage ceiling, and the employer does not pay a share (Washington WA Cares Fund, wacaresfund.wa.gov, and Paid Family and Medical Leave, paidleave.wa.gov, checked 2026-10-30). The calculator does not include it, so a Washington paycheck is about 0.58% of gross lower than the result shown. Some workers with an approved exemption do not pay it. Paid Family and Medical Leave premiums are also withheld; they are not included either.
- The federal child tax credit and other credits are not included.
- Verification of the Washington figures: rates and brackets were compared with the official source on 2026-10-30. Taxes capital gains of high earners only, not wages (Tax Foundation 2026 table).
